"You are not needed"

She looked at my bright yellow dress with the blue and red ribbons woven into the linen. The dress that my mama made for me before I left Jamaica. I thought maybe this was the wrong choice, maybe it’s a bit too much. But as I looked back at her, I realised she wasn’t looking at my dress. It wasn’t a look, it was a glare. She was looking at something more. I could tell in her eyes that she was inspecting. A million inspections a second about something I couldn’t change. She took a deep breath. Paused. And spoke:

"You are not needed"

Based on true events, this is the story of the brave Mary Seacole who was a British nurse but was not recognised as one. Despite facing prejudice and cruelty, she becomes one of the pioneers of nursing as a profession. The history books may have forgotten her, but ENSEMBLE gives her the much-deserved spotlight. Mary was a black woman, and her struggles and determination paved the way for women of colour to be accepted in the workplace today.

Read the full story of Mary Seacole on page 7 of the first issue of Ensemble Magazine.
