Often fashion is seen as an expense, a waste of money and resources. An unsustainable consumption practice that pollutes and destructs. Let's change that outlook.
Fashion can be long-lasting. It can help support artisans and talented creatives. Fashion uplifts and is a medium for self-expression - to look and feel better. Fashion is not an expense but an investment. One of the best ways to reframe our perspectives is to understand the value of materials and craftsmanship. To know that a good quality coat was never meant to cost £9.50, or a smart blouse was never valued at £3.00 a piece.
Fast fashion business models made us believe so. View each purchase as an investment. An investment into your style, look, self-expression, values, and wardrobe. Your wardrobe in many ways is a symbol of your character.
Learn to invest.
Good quality staple pieces like a long overcoat, a straight-line black dress, a quality shirt, and some stylish boots can go a long way. Less is more. Pieces that can be dressed up or down, smart or casual. Invest in these pieces. Look for pieces that bring you long-lasting joy, not just temporary excitement.
It's a myth to believe that sustainability is solely to do with branding. To buy from brands that are 100% sustainable. But no, sustainability is also about sustaining your consumer behaviour. Take time to reflect on your shopping behaviours. Ask yourself, is this a mindful purchase? Invest in fashion, and in yourself.
